An Apple a Day…

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. What happens if that apple doesn’t work and you do not have any health insurance? The good news is you have options available to you. The first resource we will discuss is Medicaid. What is Medicaid you ask? Medicaid is a federal and state run program that helps to provide citizens with affordable health coverage. As part of the Affordable Care Act implementation Medicaid was expanded and a health benefit exchange was created in Kentucky. The expansion of Medicaid now provides 308,000 more Kentuckians with health coverage, which means you may now be eligible for health coverage. Want to know if you’re eligible for Medicaid? Medicaid How To

Oh SNAP!

SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food assistance to those in need. SNAP benefits can be used to purchase food at grocery stores, convenience stores, and some farmers’ markets and co-op food programs. SNAP benefits are given to you each month on a plastic card called an EBT (electronic benefits transfer) card, which works like a debit card. Anyone who is eligible will receive services; there is no tricks to it. With SNAP you can buy any food or food product for human consumption. You can also buy seeds and plants to plant gardens to produce your own food.

However there are some rules to SNAP, you cannot buy hot foods ready to eat, food intended to be heated in the store, lunch counter items or foods to be eaten in the store, vitamins or medicines, pet foods, any nonfood items (except seeds and plants), alcoholic beverages, or tobacco products. The department of Food and Nutritional Services, which administers SNAP, expects participants that are able to work to try and do so, provide proof of certain information, report changes in a person’s situation, and to know that eligibility is reviewed from time to time.

Most college students do not qualify for SNAP unless:

  • Receive public assistance benefits under a Title IV-A program,
  • Take part in a State or federally financed work study program,
  • Work at least 20 hours a week,
  • Are taking care of a dependent household member under the age of 6,
  • Are taking care of a dependent household member over the age of 5 but under 12 and do not have adequate child care to enable them to attend school and work a minimum of 20 hours, or to take part in a State or federally financed work study program.

Though you do not need to have children to receive SNAP. If you live with roommates, but buy and prepare your food separately, you can apply for yourself alone. But if you are under 22 and living with a parent or step-parent, you will need to apply with your parent even if you buy your food separately. If you are under 18 and living with a responsible adult, you need to apply with that adult. To take an eligibility test to see if you qualify for SNAP, to make an account to start the application process, or to download the application, follow this link: https://prd.chfs.ky.gov/SNAPPrescreen/SNAPLanding.aspx

If you have any questions regarding the application process, you can call the Madison County Department for Community Based Services at (855) 306-8959.

Welcome to the Colonel’s Community!

We just want to wish a warm welcome to our visitors here at the Colonel’s community! The Colonel’s Community was created to inform Eastern Kentucky University students about resources in the community that they might be eligible for. We want to help improve the quality of student’s lives by providing them information on resources that they might want to use. We were inspired to create this blog because of the issues EKU students are facing with food insecurity, which is not being confident in where your next meal is coming from. Upon further research we discovered that a lot of EKU students were experiencing this issue and were not knowledgable of resources in our on and off campus community that might help alleviate some of that burden. This blog will hopefully help direct you to some resources that can help you in whatever situation that you are experiencing. Thank you so much for viewing our blog!
